More Time Outside = Better Mental Health
Last weekend, I spent some time in the mountains, working outside and cleaning up a few areas. I took a moment to pause and realized how much better I feel when I’m out in nature. It got me thinking—we spend so much time on our phones, computers, and screens, and at the same time, we’re facing more stress and mental health struggles than ever before.
Did you know? The average person spends over 7 hours a day in front of a screen! (Source)
But research shows that spending more time outside can actually help improve mental health. Here’s why:
How Nature Helps Your Brain
Lowers stress & anxiety – Being around trees and fresh air helps calm the mind. (Source)
Boosts focus & memory – Taking a break outside can help you think more clearly. (Source)
Encourages mindfulness – Nature helps us slow down and be present in the moment. (Source)
How to Get More Outdoor Time
- Go for a walk instead of scrolling on your phone.

- Eat lunch outside instead of at your desk.

- Take a “nature break” to reset your mind during the day.

Let’s challenge ourselves (and our patients) to spend a little less time on screens and a little more time outside. Even 10-15 minutes a day can make a big difference!
Have a great weekend, and get outside if you can!
Best,
Josh Walker
