Scale Up to 10X: Leverage Your Energy for Bigger Returns

Few people start the workday aiming to achieve five times better results than the previous day. But aiming high can actually be easier than settling for modest goals, according to an insightful business book I read recently, “10x Is Easier Than 2x.”

The idea that generating 10 times more value in your business is easier than squeezing out 2 times more value seems counterintuitive. But aiming for 10x doesn’t mean you have to do 10 times more work, according to the authors, entrepreneurship coach Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. Instead, it means using your time in ways that yield a more valuable return.

The authors frame 10x not as an outcome but as a process. Stressing quality over quantity, they advise going deep on the few activities most likely to yield exponential results and letting go of all the other, less important clients, behaviors, and mindsets. As you focus on only a few 10x pursuits, your life becomes simpler, allowing you more freedom to relax outside your usual domain, connect with other highly productive people, and think more creatively. As these collaborative relationships expand, so does your sense of mastery and the quality of your vision.

For example, Hardy cites his son’s goal-setting process as a high school tennis player. His son wants to play tennis for a Division 1 college. To work toward that goal, he could have chosen any of the dozens of available coaches who could prepare him for college play. But only one or two genuinely elite coaches could train him for a more transformational goal — to become a professional player. His son would have to work hard either way, but training for pro tennis would increase his chances of earning a spot on a D1 college team, and the 10x goal was far more exciting and motivating.

This 10x concept has been useful to me in thinking about how to help clinicians increase revenue and profit. I am constantly looking for the next one or two promising products we can offer them. Shifting my focus to 10x, I am also asking what transformational goal I can set that would equip our customers to serve 10 times as many people. New initiatives we are working on can potentially move the needle.
